💌 Love Through the Letterbox: Valentine’s Traditions & Tales from Across the UK
As February rolls in with its pink hearts and promise of roses, it’s easy to forget that Valentine’s Day hasn’t always been about shop-bought cards and fancy dinners. Across the UK, folk have celebrated love in all sorts of unique and heart-warming ways — and some of those traditions are still alive today.
At The Aroma Pixies, we believe in keeping the magic alive, whether you're treating someone special or just taking a moment to love yourself. So pop the kettle on, get comfy, and let’s explore a few cosy customs from around the country...
💌 Jack Valentine – Norfolk’s Secret Gift Giver
In Norfolk, Valentine’s Day has long had its own mystery and mischief. Instead of big gestures, Jack Valentine is known for leaving anonymous gifts on doorsteps, knocking loudly… and vanishing into the night!
It’s a tradition filled with surprise and delight, and it’s one that still lingers in parts of the county today. Some families leave treats for children, others for partners — all in the spirit of playful, secret giving. A bit like Santa, but for love.
🥄 Wales – Love Spoons & St. Dwynwen
Before Valentine’s Day even rolls around, Wales celebrates St. Dwynwen’s Day on the 25th of January. St. Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, and traditionally, suitors would carve wooden love spoons with symbols of affection and offer them as gifts.
Today, love spoons are still given as meaningful keepsakes — a beautiful way to express care that goes beyond the commercial.
💃 Scotland – First Footing & Valentine’s Pairings
In some Scottish communities, old superstitions say the first person you see on Valentine’s Day might be your future partner. And in days gone by, single men and women would be matched at dances or “Valentine’s pairings,” adding a bit of excitement to community gatherings.
While we might not be heading to village halls in our best tartan anymore, the idea of celebrating love with shared joy still rings true.
✉️ Yorkshire & Beyond – Keepsakes & Tokens
In Yorkshire and other parts of England, homemade love tokens were once far more common than shop-bought cards. Handwritten poems, embroidered cloths, dried flowers — little things with a lot of meaning.
Maybe it’s time we brought back that quiet kind of romance… even if it’s just for ourselves.
🛁 Bringing Traditions Into the Now...
At The Aroma Pixies, we’re all for reviving old traditions — and making new ones too. Maybe this year your “Valentine” is a steamy bath, your favourite soak, and your phone switched to silent.
Whether you're sending a secret gift, carving out a quiet moment, or indulging in a little pamper ritual, self-care is an act of love — and you deserve every minute of it.
